DJ HASEBE - DJ / Sound Producer -

DJ HASEBE - DJ / Sound Producer -
birth : 1971.6.25
come from : Chiba pref.
In this globalizing world music and culture are constantly cross-fertilizing and giving birth to new and exciting incarnations of music. DJ HASEBE represents one such phenomenon. This Japanese national has taken the rough hip hop street breaks of the USA to his heart and started producing his own high energy brand of rap that retains the power of the American old skool beats but also adds a fresh, international outlook. So respected is this Japanese musician that his latest album “HEY WORLD” sees contributions by hip hop heavyweights like Doug E Fresh, Speech, Mos Def and Rahzel. Jamaican dancehall superstar Beenie Man and French African divas Les Nubians were also glad to lend their talents to this remarkable album, showcasing its international flavor.
DJ HASEBE has been at the forefront of the Japanese hip hop scene since the early nineties and now has his sights set on international recognition. “I try to take things step-by-step. I believe that it helps me to be able to make progress” relates HASEBE. “I want to put Japanese hip hop in the international market!” And he is well situated to do just that. His vibrant style has drawn critical praise both at home and abroad. Speech of (the recently re-formed) Arrested Development was quick to show his respect for the cutting edge innovator HASEBE. “I Really had a cool time with Hasebe. His beats immediately inspired me to write the type of lyrics I did.” Speech too, is acutely aware of the international nature of hip hop and was clearly appreciative of that fact as well as the considerable talents of the Japanese HASEBE. “Music is the universal funk, and the proof is in the fact that is two from different background spoke the same language.” Soul superstar Omar also paid tribute to Hasebe after the two were able to work together. “I had a funky good time on the DJ HASEBE sessions and that it was a pleasure to work with such a groovy musician - maybe we'll get the chance to work together again"
HASEBE was born in June 1971 near Tokyo and was first exposed to hip hop around 1988. He immediately took to the music and saw the future music possibilities of being a Japanese DJ pushing forward this exciting new sound. He bought a turntable and mixer and started DJing seriously, moving to Tokyo at the tender age of 19 to expand his career. The city was ripe for his inspired brand of hip hop and every time HASEBE DJed the dance floors would explode due to his keen mixes and pumping tracks. At the same time Hasebe started thinking about becoming a producer. He listened to, and was influenced by, DJ Kid Capri, Fanmaster Flexx and Stretch Armstrong and he credits these artists as seminal to creating his own funk and groove.
In 1993 HASEBE premiered the event "FAT RAT" at Gold, which was on the leading edge of clubs for dance music in Tokyo at the time. The party’s success is legendary and HASEBE can be given much of the credit for creating the hip hop boom in Japan that took off at that time. HASEBE’s first mix tape was eagerly embraced and promoted by Cisco Shibuya, one of the most influential record stores in Japan. Called "DJ HASEBE 1" the tape became a must-have for the emerging cadres of hip hop fans in Japan. The awesome response led Hasebe to immediately get together another mix, which confirmed his stellar ability as a DJ and helped to continue the growth of his enormous following in Japan. His talents paved the way for him to be the opening DJ for such visiting international artists as Busta Rhymes. Constantly in demand to perform at events in Japan, Hasebe became the hottest property on the local hip hop scene. This early part of his career won him a multitude of fans in Japan and also made a substantial contribution to increasing the profile of the DJ and making it an accepted occupation in Japan.
DJ HASEBE’s major breakthrough came in 1996 when he released his first original single "Ice Pick". It featured the Japanese rappers ZEEBRA and MUMMY-D. The single was only released on vinyl at that time but was immediately deemed an underground classic. It was later re-issued on CD. HASEBE produced his 3rd mixed tape at this time, sustaining the success of his first two mixes.
HASEBE’s career was about to take another giant leap forward. A chance meeting with Aiko, a vocalist fort the group Sugar Soul, on the day of 2pac`s death initiated a fortunate partnership. Initially HASEBE served as an ad hoc DJ for Sugar Soul but all that was about to change. The track "Ima Sugu Hoshii", produced by Hasebe, was released on a Sugar Shack mini album. He followed that with his fourth mix tape which featured bandmate Aiko. At the time Hasebe boldly predicted that the music would revolutionize Japanese industry, which was dominated by fluffy Japanese pop. Despite the outrageous nature of his claim HASEBE was proved right. “Ima Sugu Hoshii” sold 20,000 units and has continued to sell. Further hip hop has become a major force on the Japanese music scene.
HASEBE released a mini album called "Adore" which was also well received. Since then he has gotten a multitude of requests to remix and produce from a wide spectrum of Japanese artists. Records he has produced have sold over 10,000 units and the requests continue to roll in. His highly successful weekly club night "Honey Dip" held at Club Harlem since April 1997 moved to Space Lab Yellow, one of Tokyo`s premier club venues, in January 2001. His debut full-length album, "HEY WORLD" has sold over 100,000 copies in Japan and continues to be hot property. It is plain to see the horizons are boundless for this talented and exciting international hip hopper. And the album also released in Europe by Warner groups.
Hasebe has spun for several events in US from 2003 such as Coors Mountain Rock Jam Festival, Nike Jordan Launch Party, Playstation Party and more at Hollywood. He has received very good responses from artists, audiences, and press every time he spun at overseas.
Hasebe had the Asia Tour with Edison Chen, super star from Hong Kong in summer 2004, and he also produced him four songs for Edison’s album.
